Why Guptkashi is Special?

Before we talk about the sightseeing spots, you should know why this place is important. The name “Guptkashi” means “Hidden Kashi.”

You might know about Kashi (Varanasi) in Uttar Pradesh. It is the city of Lord Shiva. Legends say that Guptkashi is just as holy as Varanasi.

The Story:

When the Pandavas (from the Mahabharata) were searching for Lord Shiva to ask for forgiveness, Shiva did not want to meet them. He hid here in Guptkashi in the form of a bull (Nandi). Because he “hid” here, the place got the name Gupt (Hidden) Kashi.

It is located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. It sits at a height of 1,319 meters (4,327 feet). The weather here is very pleasant in summer, making it a great place to relax.

Top Places to Visit in Guptkashi

There are a few main tourist attractions in Guptkashi that are right in the main market area. You do not need a car to see them; you can easily walk.

1. Vishwanath Temple Guptkashi

This is the most important place in the town. If you are in Guptkashi, you have to visit this temple. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

The temple looks very similar to the Kedarnath temple. It is made of stones and has a high tower. The architecture is very old and traditional. In my experience, the vibe inside this temple is very peaceful. Even when the market outside is noisy, the inside of the temple feels silent and divine.

Why visit?

  • It is very old and has great religious value.
  • The architecture is beautiful.
  • Morning Aarti here is a magical experience.

2. Ardhnarishwar Temple

Right next to the Vishwanath temple, in the same complex, stands the Ardhnarishwar Temple. This is a very unique temple.

“Ardhnarishwar” means a form of God that is half man and half woman. It represents Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati together in one body. It shows that male and female energies are equal.

Inside the temple, you will see a grand statue of this form. Many people come here to pray for a happy married life. As a travel agent, I always suggest couples visit this spot before starting their Kedarnath yatra.

3. Manikarnika Kund

In front of the Vishwanath temple, there is a small water tank. This is called the Manikarnika Kund.

This is not just a regular water tank. It is believed that two holy rivers, the Ganga and the Yamuna, meet here.

  • You will see water coming out of a cow’s mouth (Gau Mukh). This represents the Ganga.
  • There is another source of water shaped like an elephant’s trunk. This represents the Yamuna.

Local people say that the water here is very pure. Many pilgrims wash their hands and face here before entering the main temple.

Guptkashi Nearby Places (Excursions)

If you have an extra day or half a day, there are some amazing places very close to Guptkashi. These are the best Guptkashi nearby places that you can add to your plan.

4. Triyuginarayan Temple (The Wedding Place)

Distance from Guptkashi: 30 km (approx 1 hour drive)

This is one of the most famous spots right now. Triyuginarayan is the place where Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati got married.

  • The Eternal Fire: Inside the temple, there is a fire (havan kund) that has been burning for three Yugas (ages). It is said this is the same fire from their wedding.
  • Wedding Destination: Nowadays, many people from all over India come here to get married.
  • Views: The drive from Guptkashi to Triyuginarayan is beautiful. You can see wide views of the Himalayas.

5. Ukhimath (Winter Seat of Kedarnath)

Distance from Guptkashi: 14 km (approx 30 mins drive)

Ukhimath is on the other side of the valley. You can see Ukhimath from Guptkashi.

During the winter months (November to April), the Kedarnath temple closes due to heavy snow. The idol of Lord Kedarnath is brought down to the Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath. So, if you are visiting in winter, Ukhimath is the main place for darshan.

6. Kalimath Temple

Distance from Guptkashi: 12 km

This is a very powerful temple dedicated to Goddess Kali. It is one of the Siddha Peeths. The interesting thing is that there is no idol here. People worship a silver plate that covers a sacred pit. It is a very raw and spiritual place located near the river.

7. Chopta (Mini Switzerland)

Distance from Guptkashi: 45 km (approx 1.5 hours)

If you love nature, you must go to Chopta. It is called the “Mini Switzerland of India.” It has green meadows and thick forests. From here, you can also trek to the Tungnath temple, which is the highest Shiva temple in the world.

Where to Stay in Guptkashi

This is a very common question I get at Clans Stays.

Guptkashi has better hotels than Sonprayag or Gaurikund. In Sonprayag, rooms are very small and basic. But in Guptkashi, you can find luxury cottages, resorts, and decent budget hotels.

  • Luxury: There are helipad resorts that offer great comfort.
  • Budget: Many lodges are available near the main market.
  • Camps: You can also stay in Swiss camps with attached washrooms for a different experience.

Since I run a travel agency, I always advise my clients to book hotels in advance, especially in May and June. The rooms get sold out very fast.

Practical Travel Tips for Guptkashi

Here are some tips from my 5 years of experience to make your trip smooth:

  1. Carry Cash: There are ATMs in Guptkashi, but they often run out of cash during the yatra season. Keep enough cash with you.
  2. Warm Clothes: Even in summer, the nights can get chilly. Always carry a light jacket.
  3. Book Helicopter Early: If you plan to fly to Kedarnath, the helipad is in Guptkashi (and nearby Phata/Sersi). Tickets open months in advance and sell out in minutes.
  4. Medical Shops: Guptkashi has good medical stores and a small hospital. If you need medicines for altitude sickness, buy them here before going up to Kedarnath.
  5. Network: Jio and Airtel work very well here. BSNL also has good coverage.
