Hello friends, welcome back to the Clans Stays blog. I am Mayank. If you are planning a trip to Kedarnath, you have definitely heard of Guptkashi. Most people think Guptkashi is just a small stop where they sleep for one night before going to Kedarnath. But after working in the travel industry for 5 years, I can tell you that this place is much more than just a stop. Guptkashi is a holy town with deep secrets. It has ancient temples, beautiful views of the snow peaks, and a very calm vibe. In this blog, I will share the best places to visit in Guptkashi, the history behind them, and some nearby spots you must see. I am writing this guide like a local friend helping you plan the perfect trip. Let’s explore the hidden gem of Uttarakhand. Why Guptkashi is Special? Before we talk about the sightseeing spots, you should know why this place is important. The name “Guptkashi” means “Hidden Kashi.” You might know about Kashi (Varanasi) in Uttar Pradesh. It is the city of Lord Shiva. Legends say that Guptkashi is just as holy as Varanasi. The Story: When the Pandavas (from the Mahabharata) were searching for Lord Shiva to ask for forgiveness, Shiva did not want to meet them. He hid here in Guptkashi in the form of a bull (Nandi). Because he “hid” here, the place got the name Gupt (Hidden) Kashi. It is located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. It sits at a height of 1,319 meters (4,327 feet). The weather here is very pleasant in summer, making it a great place to relax. Top Places to Visit in Guptkashi There are a few main tourist attractions in Guptkashi that are right in the main market area. You do not need a car to see them; you can easily walk. 1. Vishwanath Temple Guptkashi This is the most important place in the town. If you are in Guptkashi, you have to visit this temple. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple looks very similar to the Kedarnath temple. It is made of stones and has a high tower. The architecture is very old and traditional. In my experience, the vibe inside this temple is very peaceful. Even when the market outside is noisy, the inside of the temple feels silent and divine. Why visit? 2. Ardhnarishwar Temple Right next to the Vishwanath temple, in the same complex, stands the Ardhnarishwar Temple. This is a very unique temple. “Ardhnarishwar” means a form of God that is half man and half woman. It represents Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati together in one body. It shows that male and female energies are equal. Inside the temple, you will see a grand statue of this form. Many people come here to pray for a happy married life. As a travel agent, I always suggest couples visit this spot before starting their Kedarnath yatra. 3. Manikarnika Kund In front of the Vishwanath temple, there is a small water tank. This is called the Manikarnika Kund. This is not just a regular water tank. It is believed that two holy rivers, the Ganga and the Yamuna, meet here. Local people say that the water here is very pure. Many pilgrims wash their hands and face here before entering the main temple. Ukhimath (Winter Seat of Kedarnath) Distance from Guptkashi: 14 km (approx 30 mins drive) Ukhimath is on the other side of the valley. You can see Ukhimath from Guptkashi. During the winter months (November to April), the Kedarnath temple closes due to heavy snow. The idol of Lord Kedarnath is brought down to the Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath. So, if you are visiting in winter, Ukhimath is the main place for darshan. 6. Kalimath Temple Distance from Guptkashi: 12 km This is a very powerful temple dedicated to Goddess Kali.
